STARTING OVER, AGAIN (listen
to MP3 sample)
THE
SONG: This was the first song written for "Perfect
Smile". Kind of John Lennon-ish, I think. In the same
vein as "Isolation" on the Plastic Ono Band record.
At least that is what we were going for. That's one of my
favorite albums. At
the time this song was written, our other band The Badlees
were at a standstill. People not getting along, legal hell,
label hell, the whole bit. I kind of had the feeling we were
starting a new chapter with this Cellarbirds record. So I
starting writing this tune. However, I didn't want the song
to be specifically about that situation so I threw a lot of
lines and phrases in there to throw it off the trail. I'll
do that a lot. Make it a little vague for interpretation and
depth. My tunes are almost never about one person or event.
I try and focus on ideas and feelings and use whatever I can
think of to get that across. Kurt Vonnegut says that the key
to being a good writer is to lie. Lie but "keep the arithmetic
sound". Lie, cheat, and steal to get your point across,
but make sure it is plausible.
THE
RECORDING: Like "Time For Pride", this one was
recorded fast. Not much to it. Very few overdubs. Once again,
we were trying to make "Starting Over, Again" sound
like a track on the Plastic Ono Band record. The watery guitar
sounds are all done with a Phase 90. I like the way this track
feels
